Job Profile: Learning Experience Design & Development

Level: 9 Specialist/Consultant

Team: Learning Prototype Development

Np- 15days to Immediate 

 

Job Summary:

  • Partners with the Learning Experience Design lead, to prototype and develop the instructor led (ILT), vILT and Web based (WBT) learning experience and then guides the designers in the development of the learning components
  • Ensures that learning experience components are developed per the ILT, vILT and WBT instructional development process, quality, effort budget, timeline, and durability standards while fostering an iterative, Design Thinking approach to learning development components
  • Provides the day-to-day direction of multiple learning experience components – specifically those with small-to-medium scope, moderate budget, and complexity - required to achieve business outcome
  • Depending on the scope and size of the learning experience, may be required to provide limited hands-on development of learning components
  • Is supported by the Manager to track, report progress, and ensure completion per the agreed-upon schedule and within budget
  • Manages a team of 2-4 (on average) Instructional Designers, internal/external Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)
  • May provide learning component development expertise to the Manager for estimating effort (cost or output hours), the iterative component development approach and timeline, and the resource plan and schedule
  • designs the learning experience overall, which may include other components beyond the course, such as a collection site. In the design summary document, provide Learning Prototype & Development (LP&D) with the overall learning experience journey and high-level details for the courses. LP&D takes it from there.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Transition Learning Experience Design into Learning Components

  • With the direction of the Instructional Designer Team Lead, takes the overall learning experience journey and high-level details from the Design Thinking discussions and the design summary document and translates the learning development components into prototypes and fully developed components
  • Supports audience and needs analyses to drive learning outcomes from business outcomes
  • Sets direction for the Instructional Designers for durable learning and Design Thinking approaches
  • Ensures learning is measurable against business outcomes
  • Defines learning component prototyping and testing approach

 

Iterative Development Using Prototypes

  • Provide input to project workplans that allow for an iterative prototype/development approach
  • Facilitate LP&D team project kick-off meeting with client to build understanding of the client and project
  • Confirm client subject matter expert agreement to detailed schedule and involvement throughout the process, and setting expectations for the remainder of the effort
  • Identify detailed learning objectives for each component based on business drivers and performance goals
  • Create low-fidelity prototypes to get early stakeholder and user feedback to refine design solutions
  • Facilitate content gathering from Subject Matter Experts to develop components and create prototypes
  • Oversee Instructional Designers and the development of learning components to support the learning design specifications
  • May be required to provide limited hands-on development of learning components, depending on the scope and size of the learning experience
  • Determine strategy to capture learner feedback and ensure the feedback is acquired and addressed as appropriate and how SMEs will review or participate in pilot and acceptance testing
  • Ensure overall quality, integrity, organization and execution of the learning design meets agreed-to quality criteria, business objectives, and project timeline
  • Ensure the learning experience components incorporate activities and interactions that foster a durable learning experience – specifically that it is relevant, spaced, effortful, practical, engaging, contextual, generative, and social
  • Communicate and confirm with the client any significant design changes in the learning components

 

Issue and Risk Management

  • Partner with client and Manager to ensure project level risks and issues with timeline, scope, and budget are appropriately documented, reported, and mitigated

 

Transition to Delivery

  • Partner with the Manager to ensure a full transition of the learning components to the Strategic Delivery Planner as the learning experience moves into deployment/mobilization 

 

Relationship Management

  • Collaborate with team, peers, and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) via professional communication channels to maintain relationships

 

Complete Project Administration

  • Provide coaching to team members regarding topics such as LP&D process, quality metrics and professional behaviors
  • Contribute to status reporting including estimates to complete work; identify potential risks and recommendations for mitigation
  • Request feedback related to deliverables and team performance, suggest, and execute action items
  • Provide performance feedback as appropriate
  • Identify continuous improvement areas based on lessons learned; modify process steps as appropriate for client situation with direction from manager

 

Relationships:

Reports to: Learning Manager and Learning Experience Design Lead

Supervises: 1-4 Instructional Designers (L10-11)

Coordinates with: Learning Experience Design Lead and various learning teams

External Relationships: Client Subject Matter Experts, L&TD, business sponsors, vendors

 

Qualifications:

Education:    

  • BA/BS - degree in Instructional Design, Cognitive Psychology, English, Technical Writing, Communications, related field, or equivalent experience.

 

Work Experience: 

  • 3 or more years of instructional design or related field
  • Academic or practical industry experience
  • Solid experience in developing performance solutions
  • Solid experience leading teams
  • Prefer experience with developing training solutions for global audience; adjusting materials based on cultural needs, regional constraints and localization or translation considerations

 

Work Requirements: 

  • Periodic OT (10-15%)

 

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

  • Knowledge of advanced instructional design techniques and topics, adult learning theory, and web-based development tools
  • Strong understanding of and familiarity with Design Thinking (also known as Human-Centered Design) and Agile Learning Development
  • Strong written communication skills - working knowledge of editorial requirements– grammar and instructional design of materials; attention to detail to ensure quality
  • Strong oral communication skills - ability to facilitate client SMEs and sponsor discussions to set expectations and ensure appropriate involvement
  • Must be skilled in several instructional approaches (web-based, instructor-led, or virtual instructor-led, and blended training)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Ability to plan and estimate tasks; knowledge of project management tools including work planning and resource scheduling
  • Advanced knowledge of issue identification and problem-solving tools
